My Insurance Company Denied My Appeal. Am I Stuck With The Bill?

Question: I recently had a claim denied, which I appealed to my insurance company. They also denied my appeal. Is there anything else I can do or am I stuck with the unpaid bills?

Fortunately, there is more you can do, and you may not be stuck with those unpaid bills. You still have more appeal options after your initial appeal is denied by your insurance company.

Insurance companies are regulated by State agencies. In each State, there is an independent appeal process where a whole new set of fresh eyes will look at the issue. The method to appeal should be listed right on the insurance company denial notice. Regardless, you can contact your State Insurance Agency directly using this map. Note that the medical bills are still your responsibility until the appeal(s) are resolved. Be sure to communicate to your medical bill provider that you are working through appeals to get the provider paid and you want the provider to put a “hold” on your account. Finally, if the State Agency denies your appeal and you still believe you have a claim, then consult with an attorney in your area.
